Are You Meeting Your Recommended Phosphorus Intake?

Affirmative, the element that ignites things.

Phosphorus is a mineral shrouded in enigma that might seem incongruous in human physiology. When phosphorus is pondered upon, the immediate association is often with “fire,” given its presence in commercial matches and military incendiary devices. Nevertheless, this fiery mineral is a crucial constituent of bodily chemistry, provided it is in the correct proportions.

Similar to calcium, phosphorus is predominantly located in your bones. Working hand in hand with calcium, phosphorus aids in fortifying bones, preventing severe fractures and breakages. It also contributes to dental health, fortifying teeth and warding off cavities. Remarkably, phosphorus ranks as the second most prevalent mineral in the human body, with an average individual’s phosphorus content constituting roughly 1% of their overall body weight.

Nonetheless, this ubiquity isn’t an unbridled virtue. An excess of phosphorus in the body prompts the leaching of calcium from bones, rendering them fragile and brittle. Furthermore, phosphorus and calcium can aggregate in unintended sites, leading to calcium deposits in delicate tissues like the lungs, eyes, and heart. Kidneys function to eliminate excess phosphorus from the system, but a diet rich in certain foods can escalate phosphorus levels.

To maintain optimal health, your phosphorus levels must be within a specific range. In the instance of phosphorus deficiency, incorporating protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, and dairy is recommended. Conversely, if phosphorus levels are elevated, it is advisable to avoid such foods, especially highly processed items typically found in fast-food establishments which have heightened phosphorus levels for preservation purposes.

If uncertain about your current phosphorus levels, consider undergoing a blood test at your local medical facility.
