Carbohydrates are more than just “those negative elements in bread.”
Over the past few decades, carbohydrates have emerged as one of the several culinary monsters that trendy diets insist you eliminate completely from your life. “Avoid bread, it’s packed with carbohydrates! You’ll gain weight!” And yes, if you consume bread excessively, you’ll probably gain some weight. However, a proper consumption of carbohydrates is essential for a healthy body, regardless of what a stranger on Twitter might say to you.

Carbohydrates are the primary fuel for your body. The glucose in your bloodstream is metabolized by carbohydrates and distributed to the rest of your body. While overindulgence in carbohydrates could disrupt your blood glucose levels, potentially increasing your diabetes risk, cutting them out entirely could result in feeling fatigued and sluggish, yet paradoxically, incapable of achieving a restful night’s sleep. Carbohydrates also serve as backup energy; without any stored energy when you go to sleep, your body won’t have the resources necessary for self-repair.
Setting all that aside, attempting to completely eradicate all carbohydrates from your diet will deny you numerous nutritious foods in the process. The beneficial types of carbohydrates, namely simple and complex carbohydrates, are primarily found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. I believe I don’t need to elaborate on why consuming none of those foods is unwise.
If you aim to reduce something, consider moderating your consumption of refined carbohydrates, primarily derived from items like white bread, pasta, and cake. Refined carbohydrates undergo extensive processing and contain sweeteners such as corn syrup. Those are the carbohydrates you might consider abstaining from.
