    Garlic Might Have an Unpleasant Odor, But it’s Valuable!

    During my college days, a lengthy debate with my flatmate unfolded concerning the health advantages of consuming raw garlic. While we both had a mild preference for garlic, he believed that the method of consumption was immaterial. In an attempt to disprove his theory, I decided to chomp on a whole raw garlic clove. It turned out to be one of the most pungent things I had ever tasted, and my eyes watered profusely for a considerable time thereafter. Needless to say, it was a foolish decision, but if you don’t act as imprudently as I did, raw garlic can offer significant health benefits.

    The distinctive zest and strong aroma of garlic are attributed to a natural enzyme known as allicin, an organic sulfuric compound. The reason behind garlic emitting its malodorous scent remains a mystery (my assumption is a developed defense mechanism), but beneath that potent smell lies allicin, which imparts antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory characteristics. Coupled together, these attributes can help in alleviating hypertension, reducing LDL cholesterol levels, and enhancing your immune system against common viruses like the flu. In addition to allicin, garlic also contains abundant vitamins B and C, along with an array of essential minerals like iron, copper, and potassium.     Cooking garlic diminishes some of its scent but also diminishes some of its advantages, making it preferable to consume it raw whenever possible. To avoid the fiery ordeal I underwent, it’s advisable to finely chop it and incorporate it into dishes that complement its flavor well, such as pasta, guacamole, or salads. Just refrain from consuming excessive amounts at once, or your breath will smell horrendous.
