Get a Quick Boost with a Healthy Snack

As daylight savings began on Sunday, I’m willing to bet at least some of you out there have had a couple of rough nights of sleep and are currently running low on energy. Why we even still bother with daylight savings, I’ll never know, but that’s a conversation for another time. For the time being, you’re tired, and you need some energizing snacks to get you through the day.

Your first instinct may be to reach for something sugary or caffeinated, but that’s an instinct best avoided. Caffeine can give you some very temporary zest in the noggin, but the eventual crash will leave you feeling even worse, and while your brain appreciates sugar, your stomach definitely won’t. Your best recourse is to have a snack that’s rich in helpful vitamins, as well as natural, clean-burning stimulants.

Dried fruit and nuts are a good choice, as they’re full of protein and fiber. Fibrous snacks are a good call, as they’ll help you stay satiated and not crave any more than you actually need. They’re also naturally sweet, giving your brain that sugary stimulation it craves without overdoing it. Premade energy bars and balls are a good choice, but remember to check the packaging first. Low-quality energy snacks have a lot of added sugar and preservatives that won’t do you any favors.

If you don’t mind putting in a little work ahead of time, some homemade guacamole goes fantastic with a side of plantain chips. Avocados have healthy fats your body can safely utilize, while dried plantain chips can give you a modest amount of salt. Salt is especially vital if you’ve been engaged in physical work, as you need it to sweat properly.

Good snack choices will keep you energized and satiated until proper meal times, not to mention help you get your mind off sweets during the low hours of the day.
