How to Have a Sick Day

Either recover properly or let it get worse.

Sick days are the opposite of fun. Even if it means not having to go to work, staying at home and stewing in a cloud of your own unpleasantness is… well, yeah. But if you want to heal properly, you’ve got to follow the procedure. Work through that sick haze and follow these steps so you’ll be rough and ready tomorrow (or at least the day after).

First, designate a sick zone. This’ll be where you’ll spend your sick day. Choose somewhere warm and comfortable, like your bed or your favorite couch. Make yourself as comfy as possible, ‘cause you’re gonna be there a while.

Second, gather provisions. Grab a few bottles of water, some simple, easy-to-digest snacks, some fever/ache medicine like Advil, and if you have it, some vitamin C supplements. The less you have to get up during the day, the better. For meals, eat something quick and easy that you don’t need to stand over a stove for like instant soup.

Over the course of the day, drink lots of water, you’ll need the electrolytes to keep the healing process going. Try not to overstimulate yourself; keep the lights low, keep the volume on your TV/computer/whatever low. If you’re sweating a lot, periodically wipe yourself down with a towel.

Finally, at the end of the day, do whatever you need to do to get a proper night’s sleep. It might be difficult, since you’ve been sedentary all day, so take a Tylenol PM or something similar if you need it. Hopefully, when you wake up in the morning, you’ll be back to your old self, or at least a rough approximation of your old self.
