If You’re Gonna Eat Cereal, Make It One of These

If you have to eat it, make sure you’re getting something out of it.

Breakfast cereal, much like soda, is one of those foods that society sort of had a collective “awakening” about in the last decade. Despite it being a staple of many childhood breakfasts, most commercial breakfast cereals are nothing but sugar and preservatives. Those “part of this balanced breakfast” commercials were definitely exaggerated, to put it nicely. Even so, cereal is cheap, plentiful, and filling, and not everyone has the time or money to eat a gourmet healthy breakfast every morning. If you have to eat cereal for breakfast, you should at least endeavor to eat a somewhat healthy one.

Luckily, once again not unlike soda, alongside that collective awakening came renewed efforts to make genuinely healthy cereals, or at least healthier cereals compared to the sugary crud that lines the grocery aisles. If you check out your local supermarket’s organic isle, you should find lots of new up-and-coming cereal brands looking to remake the wheel. For example, have you ever heard of Magic Spoon? Magic Spoon cereals are made with the intent of emulating all of your favorite childhood favorites, all while being completely sugar and gluten free and containing a hearty serving of energizing protein.

If fiber’s the name of your game, there’s one cereal whose name says it all: “Poop Like a Champ.” No, really, it’s actually called that. This wheat and gluten-free brand contains a whopping 22 grams of fiber per serving, both soluble and insoluble, guaranteed to clean out your colon like a drain snake clears out a kitchen sink. With a side of fruit and a glass of water, this stuff’ll set you up for one interesting bathroom experience.

If the organic stuff is out of your price range, some of the old standbys will suffice, such as Post Grape Nuts, Fiber One, and Kashi. Just remember to read the nutrition blocks to make sure you’re not getting a bunch of unnecessary additives.
