Morning Exercises, Fresh Out of Bed

For when you want to feel like slightly less of a corpse.

Even speaking as someone who considers themselves a morning person, I don’t exactly have a wellspring of energy to expend first thing in the morning. Unless I have something to direct my focus toward like a morning routine or some kind of appointment I have to get ready for, I tend to be pretty slow-going out of bed. It’s not exactly the most conducive physical state to getting a good morning workout in. Only certain kind of people can explode out of bed into a perfect handstand, but if you’re looking to get at least a little bit of a pump going, there are some simple, low-energy exercises you can do with minimal effort.

Assuming you don’t keep any equipment in your bedroom, it might be hard to get your hands on proper weights, not to mention potentially unsafe if you’re still half-asleep. As such, the wiser option is to go for simple bodyweight stuff like classic warmups and stretches. The goal here is to wake your whole body up out of low-power mode, and the best way to do that is to carefully stimulate it. Try raising your hands up above your head, then slowly roll your spine downwards until you’re touching your toes. To get a little fire in your belly, try a set of squats up against the wall.

It also wouldn’t hurt to focus on your mobility and flexibility, even if you’re not planning on going anywhere in particular, lest you be stuck with stiff joints for half the day. If you don’t mind spending a few minutes committing to it, some simple yoga can work wonders in loosening you up, while some lateral lunges can reacquaint your body with the concept of motion.

The most important thing is to stay away from anything super stressful and explosive. You’re more likely to hurt yourself if you try to push your body before it’s properly woken up. It’d be the physical equivalent of someone dumping a bucket of ice water over your head first thing in the morning.
