Halloween is meant to be amusingly eerie, not existentially unsettling.
Gosh, if I were a child, I would be totally enraged at this moment. Halloween hardly ever falls on a weekend, so you can’t stay out late as desired due to school the next day. And then, just this once, only once, this delightful holiday falls on a Saturday, and we’re in the midst of a pandemic. Life can be quite unreasonably harsh at times. However, it requires more than an existential fear of illness to ruin one of the main candy festivals, so here are some suggestions to ensure you can still enjoy a somewhat traditional Halloween festivity.

Clearly, the safest approach for your family is to plan something at home. For a simple and effortless option, have a scary/spooky movie marathon and place a large bowl of candy on the table. If your kids wish to showcase their costumes, you can arrange a virtual costume competition with your friends and their families via Zoom. Or, if your family is inclined towards creativity, you can go all out with an elaborate Halloween house decoration. Admittedly, you might not receive immediate appreciation in person, but it will certainly be highly shareable on Instagram.
If you must go out for trick-or-treating, remember, you are doing so at your own peril. And by peril, I mean potential boredom. There is a distinct possibility that many houses which usually distribute candies will be shut this year, making it more challenging to locate one. While outside, ensure to maintain a distance of six feet between yourself and other trick-or-treaters. Carry a hand sanitizer bottle and offer everyone a small amount after each house visit. Most importantly, everyone should wear a mask, regardless of whether they are already sporting a costume mask. Costume masks do not offer the same level of protection as proper face masks, so ensure that each costume incorporates a face mask either beneath it or within it.
It might feel strange and slightly awkward, but it is still very much achievable to have a joyful Halloween this year. And for you young adults out there, remember: the day after Halloween, leftover candies in stores are often discounted, and this year, there will likely be a considerable amount of leftovers. Although I understand this is a health-focused website and it may not be ideal to promote bulk purchasing of chocolate, come on. Discounted candies. It’s Halloween, have some fun.
