Hopefully, you’re okay with donning that mask for a while.
Just over a week ago, I wrote about preparing for self-isolation before my upcoming journey to visit my family across the country. Fortunately, I am in good health and received a negative COVID test result, so I will be flying out tomorrow. However, all airlines now mandate the use of facial coverings throughout flights for everyone’s safety during the pandemic, regardless of vaccination status. Keep in mind that I have a seven-hour flight ahead, which may be challenging, but it is essential, and there are ways to manage it.
Upon entering the airport until you exit at your destination, you must wear your facial covering. Ensure you have a suitable mask, preferably medical-grade if possible, but a disposable or reusable cloth mask is acceptable. Scarves or bandanas are not permitted. Also, ensure that the mask fits properly over your nose and mouth, using the adjustable metal strip. However, you can briefly lower your mask while in the terminal or on the plane to consume food, drinks, or medication.
If your mask becomes uncomfortable during the journey, it is advisable to have multiple masks in your carry-on bag. If you feel the need to change masks, step into the restroom to replace it with a fresh one. If you cannot access the restroom, seek permission from nearby passengers before briefly removing your mask to switch it. Minimize any exposure of your face as much as possible.
I understand that wearing masks for extended periods is not enjoyable, but remember that surgeons wear masks during lengthy surgeries. Be diligent like a surgeon and protect your face effectively.
