Try Bear Grylls’ Wildman Workout

This’ll really put some hair on your chest.

If you’ve ever watched Bear Grylls’ Man vs. Wild, you’d know that he is a pretty physically fit dude. When you’re swimming down rivers, climbing up mountains, and evading wild predators, you kind of have to be in the best shape of your life or you’ll, y’know, die. So how does a guy like Grylls work out? Here’s a hint: it doesn’t involve eating bugs or drinking his own recycled body fluids.

In an interview with Men’s Health, Grylls outlined his usual routine that keeps on the cusp of his stuff. Contrary to what you might think, Grylls never had much of a head for physical activity in his youth, so his routine came about with a lot of trial and error.

“I was never a natural athlete, I’ve always had to work at it,” he told Men’s Health. “I need to be fit and strong for my job.”

Many of Grylls’ favorite exercises can be performed in just about any setting with little-to-no equipment. It’s rather fitting, given his line of work, though it’s also a very convenient, cost-effective means of getting in shape.

Grylls has blocks of exercises for every major bodily area, which he performs all of in a single routine, and twice at that. Each exercise lasts for 20 seconds and is followed by a 10 second rest. Those exercises are:

  • Plank
  • Plank Knee to Elbow
  • Plank Hands to Elbows
  • Superman

  • Squat Jumps
  • Split Squats (Right)
  • Split Squats (Left)
  • Kettlebell Swings

  • Pushups
  • Alternating Arm Pushups
  • Pike Pushups
  • Close-Grip Pushups

  • Bodyweight Row
  • Pullups
  • Kettlebell Lawnmower Row (Right)
  • Kettlebell Lawnmower Row (Left)

  • Overhead Press
  • Kettlebell Hammer Curl
  • Overhead Triceps Extensions
  • Upright Row

  • Kettlebell Knees-to-Elbows
  • Kettlebell Russian Twist
  • Bicycle Crunch
  • Superman
  • Clams

Stick to this routine, and you’ll be ready to take on the world, full of all the crunchy bugs you could eat, if you’re into that.
