    Wishing for a Secure, Joyful New Year

    I absolutely can’t wait for this tumultuous year to end. While the initial months of 2021 might feel like an extension of 2020, just the act of flipping the calendar and leaving behind all the negativity is quite relieving. I’m sure many of you are already planning your New Year’s Eve soirée.

    However, despite the new year’s arrival, the pandemic is still ongoing (hence the extension I mentioned). So, if you intend to host any form of gathering, it’s crucial to ensure the safety of yourself and your loved ones. Similar to Thanksgiving, if you must host a party (a decision that requires careful thought), all necessary precautions must be taken.

    If feasible, opt for an outdoor venue for the celebration. The virus spreads more readily indoors; being outside provides better ventilation, allowing everyone to adhere to the recommended six-feet distance. Every single person, without exception, must wear a mask, barring brief intervals for eating or drinking.

    On the topic of refreshments, consider setting a limit on alcoholic beverages. While New Year’s Eve is synonymous with revelry, excessive drinking can impair judgment, potentially leading to oversight of safety protocols. It’s fine to enjoy a few glasses of champagne, but excessive drinking should be avoided.

    Lastly, exercise caution when compiling the guest list. Elderly individuals are more vulnerable to COVID-19, meaning they are at higher risk if infected. Opt for virtual well-wishes for older family members. For friends, a prerequisite for attendance should be a two-week quarantine. Although inconvenient, it is in the best interest of everyone’s safety.

    So, here’s to a secure and joyous new year. Let’s hope 2021 brings better days ahead.
