Winter Workout Tips in the Chilly Season

Exercising in the winter can be challenging.

If you enjoy outdoor workouts, the winter season may not be your favorite. The cold weather, icy pathways, the absence of greenery, and the risk of catching a cold can make it less than ideal. Nonetheless, there are certain exercises that are best done outdoors, so if you absolutely must exercise in the winter, here are some pointers to keep in mind.

Firstly, regulate your body temperature. The body temperature fluctuates during exercise and during cold weather, so combining the two can lead to discomfort. Opt for breathable and moisture-absorbing clothing. If you start sweating excessively in the cold, it can lead to a rapid drop in body temperature and increase the risk of illness. Also, consider wearing multiple layers that you can easily remove if you start feeling too warm.

Ensure that your hands and feet stay well-insulated. In extremely cold conditions, proper circulation to your extremities is crucial. Wear gloves, socks, and shoes designed to wick away moisture and keep out slush and snow. If the weather is dry, you can switch to simpler, warm materials like wool for gloves.

Lastly, remember to stay hydrated regardless of the temperature. Just because you feel wet on the outside doesn’t mean you are adequately hydrated internally. If drinking icy water in winter doesn’t appeal to you, try warming it up slightly beforehand or adding flavorings to make it more enjoyable. Just be cautious not to drink extremely hot water as it can make you sweat more.
